A Deeper Look at This Model From Siemens

This scanner is known for its light system weight and compact footprint. This 16-slice scanner produces detailed images. For patient comfort and ease of use, the Siemens Biograph 16 PET scanner features a large gantry opening, continuous patient port and short tunnel.

16 slices make this scanner ideal for a wide range of clinical needs, including the diagnosis and development of a treatment protocol for brain disease, heart disease, and cancer. Because cancer cells have a higher metabolic rate than other cells, they show up brightly on images produced by a PET scan. PET can reveal areas of decreased blood flow in the heart, to help determine if surgery is necessary. And PET will help your doctor evaluate brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s, tumors and seizures.

What to Expect from a PET/CT Scan

A PET/CT scan, such as the Siemens Biograph 16 PET CT is used for, can be done in two hours and usually does not require an overnight stay. When you arrive for a PET/CT scan, you will be given a radioactive drug, also called a tracer. You will either ingest the drug, inhale it, or have it injected into your bloodstream, depending upon the body system being analyzed. Before the scan, you will need to wait for the tracer to be absorbed, which takes 30 to 60 minutes.

When it is time for the scan to be performed, you will lie on a padded table that will be slid into the scanner. It is important to lie very still so the images produced by the scan are clear and readable. The scan will take approximately 30 minutes. While the scan will be painless, some people experience anxiety in enclosed spaces. If you are concerned about anxiety, your healthcare provider may give you a drug for relaxation.

Why Choose Mobile PET CT Scanners?

According to an article in Axis Imaging News, there are a wide range of benefits to mobile imaging.

“Proponents of this 1-, 2-, 3-, and sometimes even 4-day-per-week mobile imaging point out that it is good for patients. Patients get service close to home, with doctors and nurses they know. Some hospitals using mobile modalities say they do not make much money, but all of them who continue the services at least reach the break-even point. Local doctors like the services too. Patients stay close and radiology reports come from the local facility they routinely deal with.”

New vs Reconditioned: What’s the Difference?

When you choose a reconditioned scanner from Marquis Medical, you get a scanner that works exactly as it did when it was new. Our reconditioned systems are guaranteed to meet or exceed OEM specifications. The major difference between a new scanner and a reconditioned scanner is the price. A new scanner may cost upwards of 1 million dollars. Choose reconditioned from Marquis Medical, and save — on average, up to half the cost of new. And, the price we’ll quote you includes delivery, installation and warranty. If you need the best medical imaging technology at the best price, contact us today to discuss what we can do for you.

Other Factors in Pricing PET Scan Machines

In addition to the choice between new and reconditioned, one of the biggest factors in PET scan price is slice count. The more slices a PET/CT scanner can capture, the more expensive the system will be. A scanner with more slices will capture images more quickly. The Biograph 40 TruePoint currently in our inventory is a 40 slice PET from Siemens with a very low tube count. This is a great choice if you are seeking a great PET scan machine price on one of the most popular Siemens models.

What is BGO?

Bismuth germanium oxide, or BGO, is one of the types of scintillation crystals used in clinical PET imaging. The other crystals used are gadolinium oxyorthosilicate (GSO) and lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO). In the Ecat Exact and other scanner models, BGO crystals are coupled with photomultiplier tubes in the detectors of the PET camera system. The camera system includes multiple rings of detectors.

“The ring design utilizes the concept that two photons detected in close temporal proximity (on the order of 6 to 12 nanoseconds) by two opposed detectors in the ring are likely to have originated from a single annihilation event in the body, somewhere along a line between the two detectors. Such a simultaneous detection is termed a ‘coincidence.’ All of the coincidence events detected during an imaging period are recorded by the PET computer system as a raw data set. As in single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) examinations in nuclear medicine, the coincidence data in PET is reconstructed by a computer to produce cross-sectional images in the axial, sagittal, and coronal planes.”
