What the Siemens Biograph 64 PET CT Scanner Has to Offer
One of the advantages of this 64-slice scanner is decreased scan time. More slices means more images are captured with every rotation of the scanner.
“The Scanner creates 64 high-resolution anatomical images per rotation. This will decrease scan times to several seconds, less than 15 seconds in most cases. The slices are as thin as a credit card and support advanced cardiac studies, among other studies. These images are combined to form a three dimensional view of the patient’s anatomy, allowing physicians to view such things as blockages in the coronary arteries, as well as the motion and pumping action of a patient’s heart.”

How Does It Work?
Before undergoing a PET/CT scan, the patient will be injected with or consume a small amount of radioactive material. The patient will then enter the Siemens Biograph PET CT scanner. As the radioactive material is metabolized in the body of the patient, the CT scan takes many pictures of the inside of the body from different angles. In the case of the Biograph 64, 64 images are produced in under 1 second. It usually takes about 15 seconds to complete a scan of the area being studied, resulting in hundreds of images that, taken together, provide a detailed view of the inside of the patient’s body.
Meanwhile, the PET scan is also happening. PET captures images of the radioactive substance as it travels through the body.

A smaller crystal leads to better spatial resolution, and this Siemens Horizon PET machine’s detector array uses over 20,000 of them. This helps to visualize small lesions and therefore make better treatment decisions.
Also in the Biograph Horizon, a powerful computer system capable of reconstructing two data sets simultaneously delivers images as fast as 30 seconds after the completion of the scan. Time-of-Flight measures the actual time difference between the detection of each coincidence photon. By localizing the event within a small range along each line of response, this system enables faster scans, improved image quality, and lower injected doses.
